Turkey: Crossroads of the Ancient World is an eleven day exploration of one of the world’s most fascinating countries.  You see high points of Turkey from Istanbul to Ankara, Konya, Cappadocia, Bodrum, Ephesus, Pergamon, and return to Istanbul. 

Day 1: You arrive in Istanbul,

Day 2: Then the next day begin touring this remarkable city.  You visit Topkapi Palace, heart of the Ottoman Empire where once soldiers, ambassadors, and pashas walked.  You also see Topkapi’s recently restored kitchens, home to a superb collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain.  Your tour includes a visit to the jewel of Byzantine architecture, Hagia Sophia.  After twenty years, the restoration of its huge sixth century dome is now complete.  You visit more treasures of Istanbul including: the Blue Mosque, Hippodrome,and the Grand Bazaar.

Day 3: You fly to the capital city in the heart of Turkey, Ankara.  Here, you tour one of the world’s great museums, the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.

Day 4: You proceed to Konya on the Silk Road, once capital of the Seljuks with Persian influences and home to the 13th century mystic, Rumi, whose poetry and teachings of love and tolerance inspire the Whirling Dervishes.  You experience an evening presentation of the Whirling Dervishes here.

Day 5: You travel to magical Cappadocia with its unique geologic landscape, in ancient times the home of a resourceful and dedicated Christian community escaping Roman persecution.

Day 6: After exploring central Turkey, you fly to Bodrum to relax at a  luxury five star resort, the Kempinski Barbaros Bay along the spectacular Aegean Coast

Day 7: You visit the Crusader Castle of St. Peter and the Museum of Underwater Archeology. 

Day 8: Next, you travel to Ephesus, a crossroads of the ancient world, visited by Cicero, Julius Caesar, Cleopatra and Mark Antony, and many others.  The Ephesians were the recipients of Saint Paul’s famous Epistle to the Ephesians, the tenth book of the New Testament.  Saint John has his tomb in the Basilica. 

Day 9: The following day, you visit Pergamon, a renowned center of learning and medicine in the ancient world.  You return to Istanbul by ferry over the historic Bosphorus, at the meeting point of Europe and Asia. 

Day 10: You have a full day of sightseeing including the Istanbul Archeological MuseumsSuleiman Mosque, Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, Spice Bazaar, and Chora Church.

Day 11: You have many options,  to stay longer in Turkey or travel to other fascinating destinations or return to your home city.

All of your hotels are five star.  You stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Istanbul-Old Town, on the Golden Horn, with easy walking to sites nearby, including the Grand Bazaar (four nights); the historic Divan Çukurhan in Ankara that is designed as an Ottoman caravanserai or Inn (one night); the Dedeman Konya in Konya, once capital of the Seljuk Empire (one night); the Cappadocia Cave Resort with its spectacular view over the lunar landscape (one night); the Kempinski Barbaros Bay in Bodrum with its magical setting on the Aegean (two nights); and the Swissotel Grand Efes Izmir overlooking the fashionable waterfront (one night).

The price for the eleven day tour, with double occupancy includes all five star hotels, entrance fees, private guides, driver and private transportation, and ten breakfasts.  We also have single accommodations available.

International airfare and domestic airfare within Turkey are not included.  In 2014, the airfare for travel within Turkey on this trip was approximately $350.
