In 1498, Portugal changed the world.  Vasco da Gama discovered the first sea route from Europe to India.  Other Portuguese explorers opened trade routes to Indonesia, China, and Brazil.  A great age of exploration began that brought this undiscovered corner of Europe almost unimaginable wealth and influence.

Days 1 – 3:

Your ten day tour, Portugal: The Country That Changed the World, begins with delightful Lisbon.  You stay for four nights at the renowned Four Seasons Hotel Ritz with its historic art and glorious views out over the city.

With your private guide, driver and vehicle, you begin your touring by going to St. George’s Castle for magnificent views over Lisbon.  For the next three days, you see outstanding palaces, gardens, museums such as the Gulbenkian, and the acclaimed aquarium, the largest in Europe.

Lisbon has become renown for its cuisine.  One evening, enjoy dinner in Lisbon’s Bairro Alto, home of fado, Portugal’s traditional music of yearning and nostalgiaLater, stop at a cafe to sample the famed pastry, Pastéis de Belém.

Day 4: 

Today you have a day trip to see the architectural treasures of Evora, one of Portugal’s most beautiful cities.  The entire city is a monument, built upon its Roman foundations.  The town is the capital of the rich agricultural Alentejo province, a university center and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

 

Days 5 and 6:

After leaving Lisbon, you visit the summer residence of the kings of Portugal in Sintra.  You continue on to the medieval masterpieces of Mafra, the monastery and royal palace,  Batalha, where Henry the Navigator is honored, and the historic town of Obidos, with its ancient wall and castle.  You stay for two nights at the beautiful Seteais Palace in Sintra, now a luxury five star hotel.

Days 7-10:

You spend the day in the lively university city of Coimbra and continue to Porto, the vibrant, cosmopolitan city famous for its wine.  In the countryside you visit Guimaraes, with its medieval Old Town, and the legendary Mateus Palace in Vila Real.  You cruise on the picturesque Douro River along the Douro River Valley.  In Porto, you stay for three nights at the five star Intercontinental Porto Palacio des Cardosas, in the heart of the city in a beautiful 18th century palace.

The price per person for the ten day tour, with double occupancy, includes all five star hotels with breakfast daily; entrance fees; private guides, driver and private vehicle; and gratuities.  There also are a number of single accommodations available for an additional fee.

Airfare is not included.
